Profile

Emeritus Full Professor at the University of Lisbon. President of the Humanities Class and Vice-President of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences (2019/2021). Geographer and Urban Planner. Researcher at the Centre for Geographical Studies, University of Lisbon. Visiting Full Professor at Instituto Superior Técnico and the Universities of Umeä (1988), East Asia (Macau, 1991), and Paris X (1998 and 2003).

Holds a degree in Geography from the University of Lisbon (1960-1965) and a postgraduate diploma in Regional and Urban Analysis from the University of Lund, Sweden (1966-1968). Earned a PhD from the University of Lisbon (1972) with the dissertation The Influence Area of Évora – System of Functions and Central Places.

He has held several academic leadership roles, including Director of the Department of Geography at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (UL), President of the Faculty Board, and Vice-Rector of the University of Lisbon (1989-1990). He has led and coordinated numerous research projects in Geography, Planning, and Urban Development, funded by the EU, ESF, VW Stiftung, FCG, and INIC/JNICT/FCT.

Awards and Honours: Honour Medal of the Parish Council of Quinta do Conde (2020); Scientific Merit Medal from the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Higher Education (2018); Honour Medal of the Municipality of Alvito (2017); Grand Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique (2010); University of Lisbon Award (2010); International Geocrítica Award (2007); Honorary Doctorates from the Universities of León, Geneva, and Évora; Full Member of the Academia Europaea.

He was Technical Coordinator of the National Programme for Territorial Planning Policy (PNPOT).
