Profile

Carlos F. G. C. Geraldes is a Full Professor at the Life Sciences Department at the University of Coimbra (UC), who retired in 2018 and has since been hired as an Invited Full Professor for free, where he teaches a Master’s course. He was a Full Professor at the Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry (1992-2009) at FCTUC. He graduated in Chemistry from UC in 1972 with a grade of 19. He began his research in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in 1968 under the supervision of Prof. Victor Gil. He received his Ph.D. in Bioinorganic Chemistry from the University of Oxford in 1976 under the supervision of Prof. R. J. P. Williams. He has been professor and visiting researcher at several foreign universities, such as EPFL, TUDelft, Durham, Turin, Orleans, Debrecen, São Paulo, Pernambuco (Recife) and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, with grants from the Fulbright Foundation (USA). He is President of the NMR Section of the Portuguese Chemical Society and a corresponding member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences. His current research focuses on contrast agents for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. He has published two scientific books, 25 book chapters and 330 research articles in international SCI journals with 13152 citations (h = 61). He has received several awards from the Gulbenkian Foundation, FCT Excellence, Bruker (António Xavier Award) and SPQ (Fraústo da Silva Award). He has supervised 26 Ph.D. students.
