He graduated in Geological Sciences (Faculty of Sciences of the University of Coimbra) in 1959, obtained his PhD from the same Faculty in 1967, having presented his dissertation in Portuguese entitled ‘The study of the post-Jurassic formations of the region between Sargento-Mor and Montemor-o-Velho (right bank of the river Mondego)’, and was awarded his DSc in 1972.
At the same Faculty, he held the teaching positions of Assistant Professor, Extraordinary Professor and Full Professor, a category he rose to in 1973. He retired at his own request in 2002.
He held various positions in university management. He was consulting geologist at Serviços Geológicos de Portugal, Serviços do Fomento Mineiro and Junta de Energia Nuclear, and took part in numerous research projects in Portugal, Angola, Mozambique and São Tomé e Príncipe.
His published bibliography is essentially on thedomains of Palaeontology, Mesozoic and Cenozoic Stratigraphy, Sedimentology and Geomorphology, with studies on Portugal, Angola and Mozambique.
