Full Professor of Contemporary History and Theory of History at the University of Lisbon. He is also a researcher at the History Centre of the University of Lisbon, where he coordinates the Uses of the Past Research Group. He has a master’s degree in Portuguese Culture and Literature from the FCSH of Universidade Nova (1989) and a PhD in Contemporary History from the University of Lisbon (1995).
His main areas of research are historiographies and historians, memory policies, nationalisms, history of universities, relations between Portugal and Spain and from a transnational and comparative historical perspective also in the American and European contexts.

He has been awarded the following prizes: Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation/Portuguese Academy of History Contemporary History Prize, 2018; Análise Social Prize 2019 (ex-equo) and António Sérgio Prize CASES, 2022.
