Profile

He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the Instituto Superior Técnico and earned his MSc and PhD in “Engineering Economic Systems” from Stanford University. He is a retired Full Professor at NOVA School of Business & Economics, NOVA University of Lisbon, and was a Visiting Professor at Stanford University.

He served as Dean of the Faculty of Economics at NOVA University of Lisbon and Vice-Rector of the same university.

His main areas of interest include economics of uncertainty and information, welfare state economics, particularly in the financing of health, education, and social security.

He is a jury member for the Pessoa Prize (since 2002) and the Sustainable Health Prize (since 2011). He has worked as a consultant for various public and private institutions and served on the boards of multiple entities. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
