Profile

Graduated in History (1990) and Postgraduate in History of the Discoveries and Portuguese Expansion (1992) from the Faculty of Arts, University of Lisbon. Full Member of the Lisbon Geographical Society (since 1992), Full Member of the Historical Society for National Independence (since 1992), Corresponding Academician (1997-2003), Full Academician (2003-2012), and Emeritus Academician (since 2012) of the Maritime History Class of the Naval Academy. Full Member of the Institute of Ibero-Atlantic Culture (since 1998), Corresponding Academician of the Portuguese Academy of History (since 2004), Corresponding Member of the Instituto Balear de la Historia (since 2015), and Corresponding Member of the Academia Uruguaya de Historia Marítima y Fluvial (since 2016).

He was a founding member of the Institute of European and Atlantic Culture (Ericeira, 2003), holding various leadership positions within the institution. At the Lisbon Academy of Sciences, he has delivered lectures as part of the Institute of Advanced Studies and thematic cycles of the Institute of Academic Studies for Seniors.

He has published over one and a half hundred works in scientific and cultural journals, such as Biblos and Mare Liberum, Anais da Academia Portuguesa da História, Memórias da Academia de Marinha, the Boletim da Sociedade de Geografia de Lisboa, and in the proceedings of numerous courses, colloquia, and congresses in which he has participated and, in some cases, organised—particularly the “Maritime History Symposia.”

In 2016, he was awarded the Vasco da Gama Naval Medal by Admiral Macieira Fragoso, Chief of the Naval Staff.
