Lúcio José Sobral da Cunha (Lúcio Cunha) was born in Mesquitela, Mangualde, in 1954, is a geographer and holds a PhD in Physical Geography (1989), retired Full Professor at the Department of Geography and Tourism of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra and Researcher at the Center for Studies in Geography and Spatial Planning (CEGOT), where he coordinates Group 1 – Nature and Environmental Dynamics.
Over almost 50 years of his university career, he has developed teaching and research work in the areas of Environmental Studies (Natural Resources, Natural Risks, Environment and Tourism) and, particularly, in the areas of Physical Geography and Geomorphology (Karst Geomorphology, Fluvial Geomorphology and Geomorphological Heritage). He was coordinator of the Masters in Environmental Education, in Physical Geography, Environment and Spatial Planning and in Social Dynamics and Natural and Technological Risks, as well as the Doctorate in Geography at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra. He supervised 58 master’s dissertations and 27 doctoral theses.  In his areas of expertise he has published more than four hundred works.
He is a member of the Board of Directors and the Administrative Council of the Association Francophone de Géographie Physique and was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG). In Portugal, he was president of the Portuguese Association of Geomorphologists (APGeom) and of the National Geography Commission (CNG), having also participated in the governing bodies of the Portuguese Association of Geographers (APG) and the Portuguese Association for the Study of the Quaternary (APEQ). At the University of Coimbra he was a member of the General Council, President of the Board of Directors of the Faculty of Arts and Director of the Department of Geography and Tourism.
In addition to being a researcher at CEGOT, he is a collaborating member of several research centers at Brazilian universities and has also collaborated in formal and informal research and teaching programs in Cape Verde, Angola and Cape Verde.
