Profile

He is an Emeritus Full Professor at the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FPCEUL). He holds a degree in Historical-Philosophical Sciences from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra (1960) and a PhD in Sciences de l’Éducation from the Université de Caen (France) (1981). At FPCEUL, where he developed his academic career, he coordinated the Master’s programmes in Educational Sciences and was responsible for the Teacher and Trainer Training Unit.

He was the lead researcher in several major projects in the field of education: PLUX – Teaching Portuguese to the children of Portuguese emigrant workers in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, FOCO – Teacher Training through Competencies (1983-1986), and IRA – Research, Reflection, Action, and Teacher Training.

He was a member of the National Education Council (1997-2004), President of the Portuguese Section of the Association Francophone Internationale de Recherche Scientifique en Éducation, President of the Curricular Reform Monitoring Council, and President of the Portuguese Society of Educational Sciences.

Among his key publications in the field of Educational Sciences are Teoria e Prática de Observação de Classes: uma estratégia de formação de professores (1984) (Theory and Practice of Classroom Observation: A Teacher Training Strategy), Pedagogia, Ciência da Educação? (1992) (Pedagogy, Education Science?), O Tempo e o Lugar das Ciências da Educação (1999) (The Time and Place of Educational Sciences), Estórias com Pedagogia Dentro (2003) (Stories with Pedagogy Inside). Alongside his academic work, he has published short stories, chronicles, and other literary texts, including Mapa dos Sabores (1994), Crónicas de um portuense arrependido (1997), As Memórias que Salazar não escreveu (1999), O enterro do Conde de Orgaz: sete histórias em desassossego (2000, Porto entrevisto: três paisagens com gente dentro (2001), A Minha Vida por um Sonho (2004), Um raio de luz na noite escura (2006), Contos fantásticos e outros textos (2018).
