Profile

Professor of Molecular Biology at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences, University of Porto, Portugal. He was director of the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Porto (2009-2019) and is currently director of the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health – i3S since 2019. He is a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization and was President of the board of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory. He studied Biology and Genetics at the University of Sussex, England where he obtained a Doctorate in Genetics and later completed a post-doctorate at Imperial College, London (1983-1987). Since 1992 he has been a professor at the Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Porto. He currently heads a research group at i3S. His research work is mainly related to the study of the molecular mechanisms that regulate cell division. He has published more than one hundred original articles in international journals, supervised 25 PhD students and more than 20 post-doctoral researchers. It maintains collaboration with several national and international funding organizations such as the Austrian Science Fund, Cancer UK, Irish Research Foundation, Wellcome Trust, Polish Research Foundation, Swiss research Foundation and the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.
