Full Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medicines at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon and currently Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation at the University of Lisbon. She holds a PhD in Pharmacy (Biochemistry) from the University of Lisbon (1997), trained at the University of Cincinnati (1992-1996) and did post-doctoral work at the University of Minnesota (1997-1999) in the United States. She created and directed the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Medicines (2021), after founding and leading the Department of Biochemistry and Human Biology (2011-2018) at the Faculty of Pharmacy. She founded and directed the Research Institute for Medicines (2013-2020) and coordinated doctoral and master’s programs. Her research focuses on identifying molecular targets for metabolic, degenerative and oncological diseases, combining omics approaches and genetic and pharmacological strategies. She has published ca. 300 articles in international journals, supervised more than 100 PhD students and post-doctoral researchers, has experience in technology transfer (6 global patents, 2 spin-offs, 1 product in phase III clinical trials) and academic-industry collaborations. She was a member of the governing board of the European Association for the Study of the Liver and serves on editorial boards and international funding organizations.
