Fernando Henrique Cardoso is a sociologist, writer, university professor, and politician. He studied Social Sciences and Sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters of the University of São Paulo – USP, Brasil (1953). He taught at USP and at the Universities of Nanterre (France), Stanford and Berkeley (USA), Cambridge (United Kingdom), and at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (France). He founded the Brazilian Center for Analysis and Planning (1969). Senator, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Minister of Finance (1992–1994). Elected the 34th President of Brazil (1995–2002).
He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (since 2013). Among his numerous foreign decorations, he was awarded the Portuguese Grã-Cruz da Ordem do Mérito (1987), the Grande Colar da Ordem da Liberdade (1995), the Grande Colar da Ordem Militar de Sant’Iago da Espada (1997), the Grande Colar da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique (2000) and the Grã-Cruz da Ordem da Torre e Espada, Valor, Lealdade e Mérito (2002).
