He graduated from the École Normale Supérieure, earned a Master’s degree in Economics and History at the Sorbonne (Paris, late 1980s), and obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in 1993, with distinction.

He has taught and conducted research at leading institutions, including Sciences Po Paris, where he held the Chair of International Finance (2001–2008), and the Graduate Institute of International Studies (Geneva), where he taught Economics and International History (until 2017).

In 2017, he was appointed Howard S. Marks Professor of Economic History in the Department of History at the University of Pennsylvania, with an academic affiliation to the Wharton School. In 2024, he also took on the position of Visiting Professor of Financial History at the House of Finance, Goethe University Frankfurt.

He is the author of influential works such as The Glitter of Gold (Oxford, 2003), Money Doctors, and Anthropologists in the Stock Exchange (Chicago, 2016), standing out for his studies on the international monetary system, financial crises, sovereign debt, and the reputation of nation-states.

Flandreau served as President of the European Historical Economics Society (2006–2008) and sits on the editorial boards of several leading journals in economic history. He collaborates with organizations such as the IMF, OECD, Banque de France, and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS).
