A native of Figueira da Foz, he obtained his academic degrees from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra. His teaching and research have focused primarily on Portuguese Renaissance literature, with particular emphasis on the works of Gil Vicente and Luís de Camões. At the University of Coimbra, he has held several senior positions, most notably President of the Faculty’s Scientific Council (2006–2008), member of the General Council (2008–2011), and Director of the University’s General Library (2011–2018).

As a visiting professor, he has taught at several universities abroad, including the University of California, Santa Barbara, Blaise Pascal University in Clermont-Ferrand, the University of São Paulo, and the University of Oxford.

He directed two research units recognised and funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology: the Interuniversity Centre for Camonian Studies (2004–2005) and the Centre for Portuguese Literature (2007–2012).

Together with Zulmira Santos, he coordinates the Annotated Works of Luís de Camões, an ongoing series published by the Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda.

He currently serves on the advisory boards of the University of Minho Library and the Fundação das Casas de Fronteira e Alorna.

Since 11 September 2024, he has served as Commissioner-General for the Commemorations of the Birth of Luís de Camões.
