Profile

António Joaquim de Campos Varandas is a Full Professor at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Coimbra, where he was Head of the Department from 1989 to 1992 and President of the Scientific Commission in the period 1992 to 1995. He has been a Professor Permanent of Post-graduation in Physics at Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo (Brazil) since 2016, and was appointed Distinguished Professor at Qufu Normal University (China) in 2018.

António Varandas obtained a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Porto (1971), and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Chemistry from the University of Sussex (1976) under the supervision of Professor John N. Murrell. In Coimbra, he directed the Group of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry since its foundation. He has been a Visiting or Invited Professor in various Institutions abroad, particularly at the University of Minneapolis where he was an Invited Professor in 1988.

With an impact factor of h=59 (by Google Scholar), he has published more than 470 papers, co-authored the first monograph in Molecular Potential Energy Functions (Wiley 1984), and published 2 others in Portuguese.

He had supervised 40 PhD theses of both national and foreign students, from countries including Brazil. China, Cuba, Spain, India, and Italy. More than 30 postdoctoral fellows worked under his direction, and various professors spent their sabbatical leaves with him .

He has received several awards, namely: “Prize Artur Malheiros for Physics and Chemistry” of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences (1985), “Prize Ferreira da Silva” of the Portuguese Chemical Society (2001), and “Prize Stimulus to Excellence of Portuguese Ministry of Science, Innovation and High Studies” (2004).

He serves among others on the editorial board of the Journal of Theoretical and Computational Chemistry (currently Journal of Computational Biochemistry and Biochemistry and Physics) where he also recurrently acts as Editor.

He has received honorific recognitions abroad, the most recent one in China where he was awarded the Title of Shandong Provincial Distinguished Foreign Expert in 2018. In 2014, he was elected a Member of the EU Academy of Sciences.
