Profile
António Onofre is Full Professor in the Department of Physics, School of Sciences, University of Minho. He obtained a PhD in Experimental Physics from the University of Coimbra in 1995 (Summa cum Laude) and the Habilitation (Aggregation) in Physics from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, in 2002. His academic and scientific career has developed in Portugal and at major international research laboratories, particularly CERN.
His research spans Experimental High-Energy Physics and Astrophysics, with particular emphasis on gravitational waves produced by compact-object mergers. He has been a member of the ATLAS Collaboration at CERN since 1995 and of its Top Quark Physics Group since 2004, and is currently also a member of the Virgo Collaboration through the Universitat de València group. His research focuses on top-quark and Higgs-boson physics, searches for Physics Beyond the Standard Model, Phenomenology, and Gravitational-Wave Astrophysics, including Machine-Learning/Deep-Learning and AI techniques. He previously contributed to the CPLEAR and DELPHI experiments and held coordination and publication-review responsibilities in international collaborations.
Since 2023, he has been Director of the Centre of Physics of the Universities of Minho and Porto (CF-UM-UP) and a member of the Executive Council of LaPMET. He coordinates the Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Astrophysics and Particle Physics (iLAPP), is a member of the General Council of the University of Minho and was Director of LIP (Laboratório de Instrumentação e Física Experimental de Partículas). He has led several competitively funded research projects, supervised researchers and graduate students, and authored or co-authored an extensive body of scientific publications arising from international collaborations and Phenomenology. In 2004, he received the Estímulo à Excelência award from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
