Diversos prémios, nomeadamente – Prémios Secil de Engenharia Civil 1997; Academia Real das Ciências da Bélgica 2002, European Convention for Construction Steelwork em 2005 e 2008, Institution of Civil Engineers, UK em 2011 e 2017, International Association for Bridges and Structural Engineering em 2014. Grau de Comendador da Ordem de Mérito 2006, Medalha de Ouro (2015) da Ordem dos Engenheiros. 

Born in 1949. Graduation (1972) and Habilitation (1980) from Instituto Superior Técnico, PhD (1977) from the University of Waterloo, Canada.  SRF (1980) University of Surrey, UK, Lecturer (40 years) and Full Professor since 1985 at IST. Visiting Guest Professor (2013 and 2015) at EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland. He was Chairman of the Civil Engineering Department at IST and a member of the Superior Council for Public Works. He is a specialist in Structures and an advisory member of the Order of Engineers. Research work on bridges, special structures and structural stability. Author and co-author of more than 130 articles and three technical books published by Mc Graw Hill, 2002, Orion, 2012 and Wiley UK, 2019.

Technical Director of GRID SA, responsible for the design and technical management of more than 200 studies and projects, in Portugal and in more than 20 countries abroad, namely bridges by successive advances – João Gomes Bridge (Funchal), Freixo Bridge (Porto), Caia Bridge (Zambezi, Mozambique), interventions on suspension bridges – Railway installation on the 25 de Abril Bridge in Lisbon, rehabilitation of the Tete Bridge in Mozambique, 3rd Bosphorus Crossing in Turkey, bowstring bridges – Railway bridge over the Sado (Alcácer), Essalam Viaduct (Rabat), tie-rod bridges – Viaducts over the VCI (Porto) and Cota 200 (Funchal), Bridges over the Lis, Mondego and Ave. Special Structures include the TDM Monsanto Tower in Lisbon, a study for the Louis Vuitton Museum in Paris, the Almerea Silo (Alexandria), the Alvalade, Dragão (Portugal) and Nice(France) stadiums.

Several awards, namely – Secil Civil Engineering Awards 1997; Royal Academy of Sciences of Belgium 2002, European Convention for Construction Steelwork in 2005 and 2008, Institution of Civil Engineers, UK in 2011 and 2017, International Association for Bridges and Structural Engineering in 2014. Degree of Commander of the Order of Merit 2006, Gold Medal (2015) of the Order of Engineers.
