António Valdemar was born in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel Island, on 18 March 1938. A journalist, researcher, and olisipographer, he developed a career marked by the study of Portuguese culture and journalistic activity. He began his professional path at the newspaper República, joining Diário de Notícias in 1960, where he remained until 1968. He was one of the founders of the newspaper A Capital and headed the Lisbon editorial office of the Porto-based newspaper O Primeiro de Janeiro. He also distinguished himself as editor-in-chief of the magazine Vida Mundial, returning to Diário de Notícias in 1980, where he conducted in-depth work on Fernando Pessoa, the Portuguese Society of Writers, and the newspaper’s 125th anniversary.

With a distinguished career in journalism, António Valdemar was the first professional to receive a press card issued by the Portuguese Press Credentials Commission, serving on its General Council for several terms. He taught journalism and conducted courses on Social Communication and Portuguese Culture in the 19th and 20th centuries.

An author of books, essays, and reports on Lisbon, he was one of the main contributors to the Dicionário da História de Lisboa, directed and coordinated by Francisco Santana. He wrote numerous articles, reports, interviews, lectures, and other contributions to conferences on the Portuguese language and Lusophone cultures. He also authored more than twenty prefaces for literary works.

He participated in congresses, seminars, symposia, and other national and international events on behalf of the National Academy of Fine Arts, serving as a jury member for its annual awards from 1987 to 2014.

Elected a corresponding member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences in 1994 and a full member in 2008, he was awarded honorary membership of the Portuguese Writers’ Association in 2019. Among his notable works are interviews and studies on Almada Negreiros, published in Almada — Os Painéis, a Geometria e Tudo. As Entrevistas com António Valdemar (2015).
