Professor Emeritus at the University of Paris-Sorbonne, he coordinated the Centre de Recherche sur l’Espagne des XVIe et XVIIe siècles. His research focuses on Golden Age Spain and, in particular, on Cervantes. He was Professor of Hispanic Studies at the François Rabelais University in Tours and Professor of 16th- and 17th-century Spanish Civilization and Literature at the Sorbonne-Nouvelle University in Paris.

Among his published works are: Antonio de Guevara (1480?-1545) et l’Espagne de son temps (1976), Otra manera de leer ‘El Quijote’: historia, tradiciones culturales y literatura (1997), and Revisitando las culturas del Siglo de Oro: mentalidades, tradiciones culturales, creaciones paraliterarias y literarias (2007).

He was awarded the rank of Knight of the Ordre National du Mérite (1997) by the French Government. In his honor, the volume Écriture, pouvoir et société en Espagne au XVIe et XVIIe siècles: hommage du CRES à Augustin Redondo (2001) was published.
