Professor Carlos Sousa Oliveira is a Civil Engineer from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), and holds a Master of Science (MSc) and a Doctorate (PhD) from the University of California, Berkeley. He developed his research career at the National Laboratory for Civil Engineering (LNEC) from 1973 to 1993, where he achieved the ranks of Specialist and Coordinating Researcher. He completed his Aggregation Exams at IST in 1992 and has been a Full Professor at IST since 1993. Since 2016, he has been a Retired Full Professor at IST and has been Emeritus since July 2023. His main area of interest is seismic engineering, with an emphasis on the seismology of strong motions and seismic risk analysis. He is the author of a large number of publications in international specialist journals and has edited several books and special issues of renowned specialist journals. He is an Associate Editor of the Bulletin of Earthquake Engineering and a member of the Editorial Board of several international journals. He has participated in various international conferences and seminars, where he has presented papers and given lectures. He has been the Editorial Coordinator of several books and chaired the Organising Committee of the 15th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering in 2012. The Portuguese Society for Seismic Engineering (SPES) established the “Carlos Sousa Oliveira Award,” given to the best published work every three years. He has collaborated with the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in the evaluation of “Research Grant Applications” and in the “Evaluation of Projects funded by FCT.” He has been part of several judging panels for awards, notably the Ferry Borges Award and the Young Engineer Innovation Award. He has acted as a consultant for some institutions in Portugal and has participated in various community programmes and projects. He is a member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Engineering. He served as President of SPES from 1996 to 2013 and was President of the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture (DECivil/IST) during 2005-06. He has been President and Vice-President of FUNDEC for several terms. In 2021, he was awarded the “Nicholas N. Ambraseys” Prize by the European Association of Earthquake Engineering, in recognition of his contribution to the development of this field of knowledge.
