A lawyer by training, Carlos Nejar is a Brazilian fiction writer, translator, poet, and literary critic. He translated the works of Jorge Luis Borges and Pablo Neruda into Portuguese. He has received numerous literary awards, including the Jorge de Lima National Poetry Prize from the National Book Institute (1971), the Fernando Chinaglia Prize from the Brazilian Writers’ Union (1974), the Poetry Prize of the São Paulo Association of Art Critics (1999), and the Machado de Assis Prize from the National Library (2000).
A member of the Espírito-Santense Academy of Letters, the Historical and Geographical Institute of Espírito Santo, and the Brazilian Academy of Philosophy, he served as Secretary-General and President of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. Among his works published in Portugal are: O Poço do Calabouço (1974), A Idade da Eternidade (1981), Livro de Gazéis (1985), O Livro do Peregrino (2002), Antologia Poética (2003), Arcada Aliança (2004), and Pequena Enciclopédia da Noite (2009).
