Carlos Reis was born in Angra do Heroísmo in 1950. He graduated in Romance Philology in 1974, obtained his PhD in Portuguese Literature in 1983, and earned the title of Associate Professor in 1989 from the University of Coimbra. He was a Full Professor at that university from 1990 until his retirement on 28 September 2020. Between 2012 and 2023, he was the Scientific Coordinator of the CLP – Centre for Portuguese Literature.
As a visiting professor, he taught at the universities of Salamanca, Wisconsin-Madison (Tinker Visiting Professor), Santiago de Compostela, Massachusetts-Dartmouth (Helio and Amelia Pedroso/Luso-American Development Foundation Endowed Chair), the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, the State University of Rio de Janeiro (CAPES High Studies), and the University of California-Berkeley.
He coordinates the Critical Edition of the Works of Eça de Queirós (20 volumes published by Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda) and directed the Critical History of Portuguese Literature (9 volumes; Editorial Verbo; 1993-2016). He was director of the journals Discursos (Universidade Aberta) and Leituras (Biblioteca Nacional); he currently directs the journal Queirosiana (Fundação Eça de Queirós) and the Revista de Estudos Literários (CLP).
Between 1998 and 2002, he was Director of the National Library of Portugal; in 1999 and 2000, he chaired the Commission for the Bicentenary of Almeida Garrett; in 2000 and 2001, he chaired the National Commission for the Centenary of the Death of Eça de Queirós. He was President of the International Association of Lusitanists (1999-2001). Between 2006 and 2011, he served as Rector of Universidade Aberta and President of the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities (2009-2011). He is a member of the Cultural Council of the Eça de Queirós Foundation and the Board of Trustees of the José Saramago Foundation. In 2022, he was the Commissioner for the José Saramago Centenary.
He is the author and editor of more than twenty books on Portuguese literature, Queirosian studies, literary theory, and narrative studies, published in Portugal, Brazil, Spain, France, Germany, and Italy. He has published more than 150 articles in national and international journals, as well as in collective publications.
