Catarina Isabel Neno Resende de Oliveira, born in Coimbra, graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra in 1970 and obtained her doctorate in Neurology in 1984 from the same university. A retired full professor, she was president of the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology from 2003 to 2013.
She has held various management positions, participated in and chaired various committees at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, having been involved in the curricular reforms of this Medical School and actively participated in the pedagogical projects developed by the School in collaboration with the Universities of the Azores and Cape Verde.
In terms of undergraduate teaching, she was heavily involved in the teaching of Neurology and Biochemistry, of which she was a lecturer between 1988 and 2016, and where she implemented teaching and learning strategies with the aim of promoting interaction with clinical areas.
She participated in the creation and coordination of the Doctoral Program in Health Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine and the Inter-University Doctoral Program in Aging and Chronic Diseases, which involved, in addition to the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, the School of Medicine of the University of Minho and the Faculty of Medical Sciences / Nova Medical School of the New University of Lisbon.
His research interests focus on ageing and neurodegenerative diseases, particularly in understanding the molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration. His contribution to science is reflected in more than 300 publications in national and international scientific journals and in a large number of scientific communications at congresses and medical meetings. Her work in the area of dementia biomarkers has led to her joining European consortia for the study of biomarkers of these diseases, namely the Joint Programming for Neurodegenerative Diseases (JPND, ADPD) and DEMTEST for the study of prion diseases.
She has extensive experience in supervising postgraduate students, organizing and leading research and evaluating projects for national and international funding bodies, such as the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), Welcome Trust, Medical Research Council (MRC), Alzheimer’s Association and European Research Council (ERC).
She was a member of FCT’s Scientific Council for Health and Life Sciences, deputy director of the Portugal Harvard Medical School (HMS) program and a board member of Health Cluster Portugal (HCP).
She coordinated the installation committee and was the first president of the Agency for Clinical Research and Biomedical Innovation (AICIB).
She has received several awards and distinctions, including the Order of Public Instruction – Grand Officer, awarded by the Presidency of the Portuguese Republic, the Gold Medal from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, the Distinguished Service Medal (Gold) from the Portuguese Ministry of Health and the “Albert Struyvenberg Medal 2022” from the European Society for Clinical Investigation (ESCI). In 2024 he received the Medal of Merit – Science, awarded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT).
