Duarte Ivo Cruz has devoted particular attention to the field of theatre, working as a critic, promoter, historian, and essayist. His efforts in this area resulted in Introdução ao Teatro Português do Século XX (1969), in which he analyses the work of the main Portuguese playwrights and presents a carefully curated anthology of their texts. He served as Deputy Director of the São Luiz Municipal Theatre (1971–72), collaborated with the Ministry of Culture in the field of theatre (1984–87), and taught History of Theatre and Performance at the Lisbon Theatre and Film School. His research interests also extend to diplomatic history and international economic relations.

He has contributed with research, critical analysis, and the writing of prefaces for the publication and re-edition of works by other authors, including Viagem a Portugal by Carl Israel Ruders and Teatro Completo com Peças Inéditas by Vitoriano Braga, among others.
