Frederico Teixeira is a retired Full Professor of Therapeutics at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra. From 1979 to 2010, he taught Therapeutics and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Coimbra. From 1997 to 1999, he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors.
He has also served as a Visiting Professor at the Portuguese Catholic University’s Viseu Health Sciences Center, where he taught Therapeutics I and Therapeutics II. In addition, he was a member of the External Assessment Committee for dental medicine degrees. Since 2022, he has been a member of the Ethics and Deontology Council of the University of Aveiro.
From 1975 to 1979, he served two terms as a member of the Board of the Central Regional Section of the Portuguese Medical Association. In addition, he was a member of the Inter-Regional Committee of the Portuguese Medical Association, responsible for drawing up the Statutes of the Portuguese Medical Association, which are still in force, albeit with recently introduced changes, and one of the official representatives of the Portuguese Medical Association at the 13th World Medical Assembly, held in Dublin, Ireland, in September 1977. In 1985, he assumed the role of coordinator for the Clinical Pharmacology Commission, entrusted by the Portuguese Medical Association with the establishment of this specialty. Subsequently, he became the inaugural elected president of the College’s Board of Directors, a position he held until 2018.
From 1973 to 1983, he worked as a General Practitioner at the Regional Health Administration of the Center. Thereafter, he transitioned to the Clinical Advisory Services of the Regional Health Administration of the Center, where he remained until 2008. Concurrently, he maintained his clinical activity in a private health unit in the city of Coimbra.
He was a founding member and member of the Council of the European Association for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics (EACPT), a founding member and member of the Executive Committee of the European Network of Therapeutic Teachers (ENOTT), a founding member of the European Pharmacovigilance Research Group (EPRG) and coordinator of the Portuguese Center of the Biomed I Program (between 1993 and 1995) and Biomed II (from 1996 to 1998).
At the level of the Technical Commission for New Medicines of the Directorate-General for Pharmaceutical Affairs (DGAF), later transformed into the Commission for the Evaluation of Medicines of Infarmed, he was medical expert for the first Commission (from 1993) and then medical expert for the second Commission (until 2012), as well as clinical expert for the Coordination Group for Mutual Recognition and Decentralized Procedures – Human (CMDh) of the European Medicines Evaluation Agency (EMEA), in Brussels, and then the European Medicines Agency (EMA), in London. From 1994 to 1998, he represented the European Union in the International Conference of Harmonization (ICH) – Efficacy Group – EWG-E5. He was a member of the National Pharmacy and Therapeutics Commission of Infarmed, representing the Portuguese Medical Association.
In the domain of Medical Hydrology, he has held the position of Coordinating Professor at the Institute of Climatology and Hydrology at the University of Coimbra from 1987 until 2010, during which he taught the General Hydrology course. Additionally, he has served as President of the Board of the Portuguese Society of Medical Hydrology on multiple occasions and currently holds the position of President of the General Assembly. He is qualified in Medical Hydrology by the Portuguese Medical Association (Ordem dos Médicos), was clinical director of some Portuguese thermal spas, is an external consultant in Medical Hydrology for the Directorate-General for Health and Chairman of the Technical Assessment Committee (CAT) of the Directorate-General for Health.
He is a member of nine Portuguese and four foreign scientific societies, some of which he has held or still holds executive positions. He is also an emeritus academician of the Portuguese National Academy of Medicine and a member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences.
In addition to his active participation in congresses, scientific meetings, and courses, both domestically and internationally, he has delivered over 600 communications or lectures. He is the author of 445 scientific research and educational papers, published in books or journals both domestically and internationally (28 scientific awards have been received). He has also coordinated the publication or authored 15 educational and/or opinion books (39 articles and two books in the field of Medical Hydrology). He has served as an examiner in 33 doctoral or habilitation exams and has supervised or co-supervised 11 doctoral theses.
