Gerhard Doderer studied Pedagogy and Music at the Würzburg Conservatory (1970) and earned a Ph.D. in Musical Sciences from the Julius-Maximilians University of Würzburg (1973). His research in musicology focuses particularly on Iberian Renaissance and Baroque music.

He taught Organology and Organ at the National Conservatory of Lisbon (1973–1975), was a professor at the Hermann-Zilcher-Konservatorium in Würzburg (1975–1981) and served as its Director (1978–1981). As Full Professor in the Department of Musical Sciences, he taught at Universidade Nova de Lisboa from 1982 to 2008.
