Profile

Full Professor of Contemporary History and Director of the Department of Contemporary History at the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia – UNED (Madrid). As a researcher, his work focuses on international political and diplomatic relations, the history of Portuguese and Spanish foreign policy, Iberian relations, and the Contemporary History of Portugal.

Among his works published in Portugal are: Conspiração contra Portugal (1910-1912): as relações políticas entre Portugal e Espanha (1978), Na encruzilhada da Grande Guerra: Portugal-Espanha, 1913-1919 (1980), Do ‘perigo espanhol’ à amizade peninsular: Portugal-Espanha, 1919-1930 (1985), A relação peninsular na antecâmara da Guerra Civil de Espanha, 1931-1936 (1998), and O Estado Novo de Salazar (2010).

He was President of the Comisión Española de las Relaciones Internacionales and founder and Director of the Estudios Luso-Españoles at UNED (Mérida). He is a member of the Real Academia de la Historia, the Portuguese Academy of History, and the International Academy of Portuguese Culture. He was awarded the Portuguese ranks of Comendador da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique (2000), Grande-Oficial da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique (2004), and the Grã-Cruz da Ordem da Instrução Pública (2018).
