Degree in Geography from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Lisbon (1981), PhD in Human Geography (1996), and Habilitation in Geography (2007) from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Porto. Professor at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Porto (1982-2024). Visiting Professor at Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest (2000).
Researcher at the Centre for Geographical Studies, University of Lisbon (1980-2012), the North Portugal – Aquitaine Studies Centre (1984-2000), and the Inter-University Centre for the History of Science and Technology (2013-2017). Full Member of the Lisbon Geographical Society (since 1989), Full Member (2008-2016) and Honorary Member (2016-present) of the Commission on the History of Geography of the International Geographical Union, and Full member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences (since 2022). He is also an Honorary Member of the Societat Catalana de Geografia (2009).
Supervised or co-supervised 10 PhD theses and 50 Master’s dissertations. As a coordinator, researcher, or consultant, he participated in 25 national and international research projects. He coordinated or contributed to the organisation of 40 exhibitions on Ancient Cartography and the History of Geography.
