Profile

João Filipe Cortez Rodrigues Queiró was born in 1956 and is a full professor at the Faculty of Science and Technology at the University of Coimbra.
At the University of Coimbra he was president of the Centre for Mathematics, president of the Scientific Committee of the Mathematics Department, president of the Assembly of the Faculty of Science and Technology, president of the Scientific Council of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Research, member of the Statutory Assembly of the University and member of the General Council.
Since 2002, he has been a member of the Scientific Committee responsible for publishing the “Works” of Pedro Nunes (edited by the Lisbon Academy of Sciences and the Gulbenkian Foundation).
He was a member of the board of the International Linear Algebra Society between 2004 and 2007. Since 2005-2006 he has been a member of the Editorial Board of three international mathematics research journals.
He presented invited talks in Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, Slovenia, Brazil, Israel, the United States, Canada and China.
He was a member of the Mission Group “Accreditation of Teacher Training” at the Ministry of Education. He belonged to evaluation panels of the Foundation for Science and Technology, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education.
From 2007 to 2011 he was a member of the jury for the Gulbenkian Education Prize. From 2011 to 2013 he was Secretary of State for Higher Education.
He is the author of several articles and books, covering mathematical research, popularization, History of Mathematics and university and educational policies in Portugal.
In particular, he is the author or co-author of the books “A Universidade Portuguesa – Uma Reflexão” (Gradiva, 1995), “História da Matemática” (with M. F. Estrada, Carlos Sá, M. Céu Silva and M. José Costa, Universidade Aberta , 2000), “Governar a Universidade Portuguesa” (with Júlio Pedrosa, Fundação Gulbenkian, 2005), “Introdução à Álgebra Linear” (with Ana Paula Santana, Gradiva, 2010) and “O Ensino Superior em Portugal” (Fundação Francisco Manuel dos Santos, 2017).
