Profile

Joaquim M.S. Cabral graduated (1976) in Chemical Engineering atInstituto Superior Técnico (IST). He started his career at IST as Junior Assistant (1978) of Chemical Engineering, progressed as Assistant (1980), Assistant Professor (1983), Associate Professor (1988), Associate Professor with Habilitation (1989) and Full Professor (1992). Due to his outstanding contribution to IST, he was the first awardee IST Distinguished Professor in 2015. In November 2023, he retired as “Professor Catedrático Jubilado” and in February 2024 was awarded as Emeritus Professor of the University of Lisbon.

His career was focused on educational and research programmes at(IST. He pioneered at IST and national level the introduction of several undergraduate and graduate courses: Enzyme Engineering, Bioseparations, Cell and Tissue Engineering and Organ Engineering. He was Coordinator of the MSc in Biotechnology (1986-2001), Founding Coordinator of the PhD programmes in Bioengineering Systems (MIT-Portugal)(2007-2022) and in Bioenginerrting: Cell Therapies and Regenerative Medicine (2013-2022). He was the founder of the MSc in Bioengineering for Regenerative Medicine (2012-2022). Joaquim Cabral supervised 45 and co-supervised 15 PhD students and supervised over 40 postdoctoral and research scientists.

Joaquim Cabral was one of the pioneers of Biotechnology in Portugal. He published 547 peer-reviewed papers (h-factor 62 with more than 17,000 total citations), 12 Books authoured and edited, 94 Book Chapters, 77 Oral presentations, chairman of 5 and member of 15 organising committees of international congresses, chairman of 3 and member of 7 organising committees of national congresses and member of scientific committes of 48 international and 22 national congresses. He has 7 patents. He has played editorial roles of intenational journals, namely 5 associate editorships and member of the Editoral Board of 12 journals.

Joaquim Cabral was Deputy President of the Scientific Council (1993-1998), President of the Statutory Assembly (2008-2009), Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering (2002-2009), Founding Head of the Department of Bioengineering (2011-2018), Founding Member and Director of the Centre for Biological Engineering (2011-2015), Founding Director of the Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (2016-2022) and Founding Director of the Associate Laboratory – Institute for Health and Bioeconomy (2021-2022).
