Profile

Jorge Avelino Braga de Macedo was born in Lisbon, Santa Isabel, on 1 December 1946. He pursued an extensive academic career in economics, international relations, and governance. He completed his Baccalauréat in Experimental Sciences at the Lycée Français in 1964, recognised by the University of Toulouse. He obtained a Law degree from the University of Lisbon in 1971, followed by a Master’s in International Relations (1973) and a Master’s in Economics (1979) from Yale University, where he also earned his PhD in Economics. In 1982, he achieved Agregação at the Nova School of Business and Economics (NOVA SBE), where he was later appointed Full Professor in 1996 and Emeritus Professor in 2025.

Braga de Macedo has held various research and teaching positions. He has been an Associate Researcher at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in the U.S. since 1984 and at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in London since 1985. He has taught at prestigious institutions, including the Institut d’Études Politiques de Paris, Princeton University, INSEAD, and the University of Yale. At NOVA SBE, he taught Macroeconomic Theory, International Finance, and European Economic Integration. His research spans economic policy, governance, and development, with over 150 publications in specialised journals.

He was Director of the National Economies Directorate at the European Commission (1988–1991) and later Deputy Director-General for the Budget. In Portugal, he served as Minister of Finance (1991–1993) and chaired the European Affairs Committee of the Portuguese Parliament (1994–1995). He also presided over the Portuguese group of the Trilateral Commission and promoted the Forum Portugal Global.

Braga de Macedo is a full member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences (since 2008), a corresponding member of the Académie Royale de Belgique (since 2010), and an honorary member of the Portuguese Academy of History (since 2016).
