José A. S. Cavaleiro graduated in Physical and Chemical Sciences at the University of Coimbra (1965) and obtained his Ph.D. at the University of Liverpool (1973). His Habilitation in Chemistry was awarded by the University of Aveiro (1984).
He has been a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry, the American Chemical Society and the New York Academy of Sciences. He is a member of the Portuguese Society of Chemistry. In 2009, he was elected Corresponding Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences; since 2023, he is a full member of the Portuguese Academy.
During his career, he has held the following academic positions: Assistant Professor (1966-1973, Universities of Coimbra and Lourenço Marques), Assistant Professor (1973-1979, Universities of Lourenço Marques and Aveiro) and, later, at the University of Aveiro, Associate Professor (1979-1986), Full Professor (1986-2013), Retired/Invited Full Professor (2013-2022) and Professor Emeritus (2023–>).
He has received the following scientific awards: “Parke-Davis (1973, Robert Robinson Laboratories, University of Liverpool), “Ferreira da Silva” (2004, Portuguese Chemical Society), “Estímulo à Excelência” (2004, Portuguese Ministry of Science and Technology), “Celestino da Costa/Jean Perrin” (2005, French Embassy and Association of Portuguese Doctorates in France), “Madinaveitia-Lourenço” (2010, Royal Spanish Chemical Society and Portuguese Chemical Society), “Sibeaqo2” (2010, Ibero-American Symposium on Organic Chemistry), “Revista Virtual de Química” (2014, Brazilian Chemical Society).
He is the author of patents, hundreds of scientific publications in journals and book chapters published by Kluwer, Elsevier, Wiley, Springer, the Royal Society of Chemistry and World Scientific Publishing.
