Profile

José Adriano Rodrigues Barata-Moura was born in Lisbon on 26 June 1948. He completed his pre-university studies in France and earned a degree in Philosophy from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon (FLUL) in 1969. He obtained his PhD from the same institution in 1980.

He began his teaching career in 1971 and became a Full Professor at FLUL in 1986. He also served as President of the Directive Council (1981-1982) and President of the Scientific Council (1995-1997). From 1998 to 2006, he was Rector of the University of Lisbon. Additionally, he was a Member of the European Parliament (1993-1994).

As a member of several scientific societies, he was President of the Internationale Gesellschaft für dialektische Philosophie (1996-2000) and Vice-President of the Internationale Gesellschaft Hegel-Marx für dialektisches Denken.

Since 2002, he has been a Member of the Board of Directors of Portal Universia Portugal. He was elected Corresponding Member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences (Class of Humanities) in 2008 and became a Full Member in 2013.

His research focuses on two fundamental areas: German Philosophy, particularly Hegel and Marx, and Historical Materialism and Ideology Critique, leading to an extensive number of publications.

In recognition of his scientific merit, he was awarded the title of Grand Officer of the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword on 30 January 2006 by the then President of Portugal, Jorge Sampaio.
