Graduated in Law from the University of Coimbra, poetry and journalism are the two most prominent facets of his career.

As a student in Coimbra, he founded the Círculo de Estudos Literários and contributed to the magazine Vértice.

Later, he became deputy director of Diário de Notícias and was one of the founders of O Jornal (director from 1977 to 1985). He is part of the editorial board of Visão magazine. However, his most distinctive mark is JL – Jornal de Letras, Artes e Ideias, which he has directed and been the main driving force behind since 1981.

As a poet, he is the author of several works, including: Corpo de Esperança (1964); Poemas para a Revolução (1972); De Águia a Zebra (1978); O Mar a Mar: A Póvoa (2001); Repórter do Coração (2004); Arco, Barco, Berço, Verso (2005); and Caçador de Pirilampos (2007).
