Professor José Fragata did his medical education in Portugal and the United Kingdom. He received his doctorate in medicine in 1991 and completed his aggregation degree in surgery in 1993 from Universidade Nova de Lisboa.
He is full professor and dean professor at Nova Medical School (retired), having belonged to the General Council and chaired the Ethics Council of Universidade NOVA where he was the Vice-Rector responsible for Health for 5 years.
He coordinates the postgraduate program in Health Management at INDEG-ISCTE at IUL and was founder and president of the Academic Council of AHED (Postgraduate School in Health at Universidade NOVA).
Member of the Academy of Medicine and corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences, he is a cardiothoracic surgeon with a vast experience in cardiac surgery, for adults and children and in thoracic transplantation, and has had a long national and international career in this specialty, cumulatively with a well-diversified academic career.
He was honoured by the Golden Medals of the Ministry of Health and the Medical Council.
Presently Professor José Fragata is the president for the National Council of Academic Clinical Centers.
