Profile
Physician and historian, José Peset studied at the Universities of Valencia and Salamanca. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Salamanca with a dissertation on “La enseñanza de la Medicina en Salamanca durante el reinado de Carlos IV.” He is a professor at the Institute of History of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC, Madrid).
A specialist in the History of Science and Culture of the 18th and 19th centuries, he has focused particularly on the History of Medicine, epidemic and psychiatric diseases, legal medicine, medical anthropology, and public health. He was Director of the journal Asclepio – Revista de Historia de la Medicina y de la Ciencia and President of the Bureau of the International Committee of Historical Sciences.
Among his numerous published works are: Muerte en España (1972), La Universidade Española, siglos XVIII y XIX (1974), Ciencia y Marginación (1983), Las heridas de la Ciencia (1993), and Las Melancolías de Sancho (2010).
