Profile

Born in Luanda in 1948, he has lived in Portugal since 1959. He holds a degree in Law from the University of Coimbra.

He has worked as a secondary school teacher and, since the 1990s, as a university professor at the University of Minho (Visiting Scholar in Medicine), where he has held various positions. He was a Member of Parliament in the Portuguese Assembly from 1980 to 1991.

A writer, he has published poetry collections, novels, short story anthologies, chronicles, and miscellaneous writings. Since 1992, he has been President of the Portuguese Writers’ Association and is a Full Member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences.

He is also a lecturer, poetry reciter, and member of numerous literary juries.

His contributions have been recognised with numerous honours. He was distinguished by President Mário Soares as Grand Officer of the Order of Merit and by President Jorge Sampaio as Grand Officer of the Order of Infante D. Henrique. Additionally, he received the Medal of Cultural Merit, presented by Minister Pedro Roseta. Over the years, he has received various other tributes.

A poetry prize established by the Braga City Council bears his name.

His areas of interest and engagement are extensive and include Literature, Philosophy, History, Law, Medicine, Linguistics, Music, Cinema, Painting, and Theatre.

He is an active member of various cultural and social associations.
