Profile

Jurist and politician. José Ramos Horta studied Law at the Academy of International Law in The Hague (1983) and at Antioch University in the United States of America (1984). Nobel Peace Prize laureate (1996). Elected the 4th and 7th President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste (2007–2012 and 2022–).

He was awarded honorary doctorates by the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto (2000), Victoria University, Australia (2001), and Gyungwoon University of Busan, South Korea (2018). He was decorated by the Presidents of the Portuguese Republic with the Grã-Cruz da Ordem da Liberdade (1998), the Grande Colar da Ordem do Infante D. Henrique (2007), and the Grande Colar da Ordem de Camões (2022).
