Profile

University professor of Philosophy, specialising in Modern and Renaissance Philosophy, Political Philosophy, Ethics, and Philosophy of Education.

Although his primary research focus has been Kantian philosophy in its various aspects—on which he has published six books—he has also studied a wide range of thinkers from the Renaissance to Contemporary Philosophy, including Francesco Petrarca, Coluccio Salutati, Nicholas of Cusa, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, Marsilio Ficino, Erasmus, Philipp Melanchthon, Michel de Montaigne, Descartes, Hobbes, Locke, Friedrich Schiller, Hegel, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Paul Ricoeur.

He has also devoted special attention to Portuguese and Brazilian philosophical thought, conducting studies on Father António Vieira, Domingos Gonçalves de Magalhães, Antero de Quental, Cunha Seixas, Eça de Queirós, Leonardo Coimbra, Teixeira de Pascoaes, Aarão de Lacerda, Teófilo Braga, Fernando Pessoa, Guerra Junqueiro, António Sérgio, Agostinho da Silva, and Miguel Reale.
