PhD in Statistics and Computation (speciality in Operations Research) in 1991, and the “Aggregation” in the speciality of Statistics and Operations Research in 2000. Member of the Scientific Council from 2009 to 2021.

Coordinator of the research units, “Center of Mathematics, Fundamental Applications and Operations Research” from 2018 to 2023 and of the “Center of Operations Research” from 2004 to 2014. Co-coordinator of the European Network Optimization Group (ENOG), a working group of the Association of European Operational Research Societies, since 2007, and President of the Telecommunications Section of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences in the period 2012-2014.

The research contributions are focused on reformulations of Mixed Integer Linear Programming for network design and routing problems. Published  more than 100 publications in journals and book chapters. Commitment to the scientific community is also evident through roles as the co-editor-in-chief of the journal Networks (since January 2023) and as an associate editor for several prestigious journals such as Computers & OR, EJCO and of RAIRO – Operations Research.

Relevant role in the training and career development of researchers, having supervised nearly 15 Ph.D. students and Post-Docs. Secured funding for research projects, including being the Principal Investigator for the “RORNET” project, funded by FCT. His impact extends beyond academia, as evidenced by my involvement in organizing international conferences and serving in leadership roles for scientific committees.
