Profile

She is a sociologist and senior researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon (ICS-ULisboa). She was part of the pioneering team that introduced Environmental Sociology in Portugal, in research, education, and the connection between academia and society. She was also among the founders of OBSERVA – Observatory of Environment, Territory, and Society, which she currently leads, coordinating multiple research projects linking social sciences and the environment.

Her publications cover topics such as: climate policies and the social dimensions of climate change; values, practices, and social representations of the environment; education for sustainable development; social issues in energy management, including energy poverty; media analysis of environmental and climate change issues;  public participation and climate adaptation processes. Some of her recent books include: 50 Anos de Políticas Ambientais em Portugal – Da Conferência de Estocolmo à Atualidade (2023), Porto: Edições Afrontamento; Climate Change and Society (2022), Ed. Frontiers); IIº Grande Inquérito à Sustentabilidade em Portugal (2022), with M. Truninger, J Guerra & P. Prista, Lisboa: Imprensa de Ciências Sociais.  

In 2016, she received the Ciência Viva Media Prize from the Portuguese National Agency for Scientific and Technological Culture. In 2022, she won the Visão Verde “Personality” Award.

She regularly contributes to radio programmes and is a columnist for the newspaper Expresso, writing on environmental and civic issues.
