Profile
With a degree in Philosophy, I have developed a full academic career, having achieved Full Professorship in Ethics (2000). My choice of Ethics goes back to when I was a university student; after my PhD, I opted for a specialization in the field of Applied Ethics, which today justifies my current membership of UNESCO’s World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST), the Council of Europe’s Steering Committee for Human Rights in the fields of Biomedicine and Health (CDBIO), the European Commission’s European Group of Ethics in Science and New Technologies (EGE, vice-chair) and the National Ethics Council for Life Sciences (CNECV, chair), as well as being an Ethics Expert and Project Evaluator for the European Commission, a member of various hospital Ethics Committees and chair of various European Ethics Advisory Boards. Throughout this career I have published 38 books, as author or editor, hundreds of articles, held hundreds of conferences, coordinated international projects and served on the scientific/editorial boards of international academic and scientific journals. My civic involvement, manifested as a columnist in various regional and national periodicals, led me to serve the country as an advisor to the President of the Republic’s Civil House and as a member of the European Parliament. I was honoured with the Commendation of the Order of Prince Henry the Navigator, awarded by the President of the Republic.
