Profile

M. Ivette Gomes is an Emeritus Professor at Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon (FCUL), since 2017, and a principal researcher at Centre for Statistics and Applications, UL, since 1975. She was elected an Effective Member of ‘Academia das Ciências de Lisboa’ in 2018. In 1986-2011, she was a Full Professor at the Department of Statistics and Operations Research, FCUL. She has got a Degree at Pure Mathematics (FCUL, 1970), a PhD in Statistics (University of Sheffield, UK, 1978) and a Habilitation Degree in Applied Mathematics (FCUL, 1982). She was a founding member of the Portuguese Statistical Society, its President (1990-1994), and Vice-President of the International Statistical Institute (ISI), 2015 -2017. She is member of several scientific Associations. She has been involved in the organisation of several international conferences, including the 56th ISI World Statistics Congress, 2007, with more than 2000 participants. Among other editorial duties, she was Editor-in-Chief of Revstat—Statistical Journal (2003-2018), and she is Associate Editor of Extremes since 2007. She supervised several MSc, PhD and Post-Doc students. She has lectured several courses at first and post-graduate levels. She has the co-authorship of 6 books, 11 books/journal editions, more than 200 book chapters/articles in international periodicals and several articles in national periodicals and in conference proceedings. Her main areas of research are Extreme Value Theory, Reliability Theory, Resampling Methodologies, Statistical Quality Control and Statistics of Extremes.
