Profile

Full Professor at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto, where he is currently Vice-Dean. He is director of the Casa dos Livros | Centro de Estudos da Cultura em Portugal da Universidade do Porto. He is member of the Academia Europaea and researcher at CITCEM (Transdisciplinary Research Center “Culture, Space and Memory”). His research focuses on Medieval Archaeology, covering areas such as Military Architecture (Castles), Medieval Armaments, Manorial Architecture (domus fortis) and Portuguese Medieval Epigraphy (which was the subject of his PhD). He is the author of more than 160 studies (books and articles).
He is the scientific coordinator, together with Luís Carlos Amaral, of the Commission for the Commemoration of the 900th anniversary of the Battle of S. Mamede (1128-2028). He was director of the magazine PORTVGALIA (1999-2024). Together with Jorge de Alarcão, he coordinated the Dictionary of Portuguese Archaeology (Porto, Figueirinhas, 2012) and was one of the four coordinators of the Encyclopedia of the Romanesque in Portugal (3 vols., Fundación Santa Maria la Real, Aguilar de Campoo, 2023).
