He obtained his PhD in Mathematics from the Instituto Superior Técnico and did post-doctoral work at the University of Pennsylvania. In 2005, he was awarded the IBM, Portugal scientific prize for his thesis. He is currently a full professor in the Mathematics Department at IST and a researcher at the Telecommunications Institute. In 2006, he founded and currently coordinates the Quantum Information and Security Group. His current research is focused on the use of quantum resources for information security, and he is the author and co-author of more than 70 publications in international peer-reviewed journals in the field of mathematics. He has coordinated several national and international projects and has been guest editor of the Logic Journal of the IGPL, IEEE Communications, and has served on the scientific committee of several conferences. He was invited by the scientific foundations of Hungary (OTKA) and the Czech Republic (GACR), as well as by the Israeli Ministry of Science and Technology, to be a member of the evaluation board of their national projects and post-doctoral fellowships. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the European Union Agency for Cybersecurity (ENISA) and a consultant to the National Security Office, as well as several companies in the field of cybersecurity.
