Full Professor at the Department of Plant Biology, Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon, where he teaches Cell and Molecular Biology and where he has held the positions of Department Chair (2017-2023) and Deputy Head of the Faculty (2011-2014).
He has been a lecturer at the University of Lisbon since 1992, working at the BioISI (Biosystems and Integrative Sciences Institute), of which he is currently the Director. Listed in the “World’s Top 2% Scientists” by Elsevier (DOI: 10.17632\\\/btchxktzyw.3), he has carried out regular scientific activities, especially in the field of sexual reproduction in plants, authoring or co-authoring about 85 articles in international journals, several book chapters, and giving a considerable number of invited lectures at international conferences and seminars in foreign laboratories and universities. His laboratory carries out multidisciplinary research (bioimaging, molecular and cell biology, biochemistry, genetic engineering and physiology, plant cell culture) with a focus on cell growth signaling mechanisms and extracellular interactions.
He regularly participates in scientific communication and dissemination activities, notably the publication of the books “The Pollen tube – A Cellular and Molecular Perspective” (Springer-Verlag, 2006) and “O Bosão do João – 88 poems with Science” (Bythebook, 2014). Co-author of the children’s book “Aventuras de Pedro – o Grão de Pólen” (Adventures of Peter – the Grain of Pollen) (Bythebook, 2016). Editor of “Complexidade – Implicações e políticas globais “, (Complexity – Global implications and policies) (Bythebook, 2021, ISBN 978-989-53277-4-4).
