Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi (born July 2, 1939) is the current Ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah and a member of the Supreme Council of the United Arab Emirates. He earned his second PhD in 1999 at Durham University with a dissertation on the political geography of the Gulf, Power Struggles and Trade in the Gulf (1620–1820).

His scholarly work is notable for its rigorous use of primary sources and its critical, comparative approach, establishing a historiographical milestone in the study of Gulf history.

As an academic and author, Sheikh Sultan has published extensively on the historical and political dynamics of the Gulf region. He has also taught and played a leading role in advancing higher education and university development within his emirate.
