Renaissance art historian, Sylvie Deswarte-Rosa has devoted much of her research to the cultural and artistic relations between Portugal and Italy through the figure of Francisco de Holanda (1517–1584), painter, illuminator, architect, and author of artistic treatises. She is Emeritus Research Director at the Institut d’Histoire des Représentations et des Idées dans les Modernités of the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon (CNRS). She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon (2017).
Among her numerous published works are: Les Enluminures de la Leitura Nova, 1504–1552: étude sur la culture artistique au Portugal au temps de l’Humanisme (1977), As Imagens das “Idades do Mundo” de Francisco de Holanda (1987), and Ideias e Imagens em Portugal na Época dos Descobrimentos: Francisco de Holanda e a Teoria da Arte (1992).
