Profile

Full Professor, in Joint Appointment” at the Department of Physics and the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Sciences of the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). Ph.D. in Physics at IST. Post-doctoral fellow at the University of Hannover. Habilitation at IST in 1996. Senior researcher at LIP and leader of the hadron physics theory group NPSTRONG.

Her areas of interest and scientific work include nuclear/hadronic physics – interactions between three nucleons, relativistic effects in spectroscopy and the structure of mesons and baryons, with emphasis on the use of vector meson dominance in quark-photon coupling and pioneering the use of QCD data in networks to calibrate the electromagnetic current in baryons.

Her cultural and knowledge transfer activities are numerous, including: International publication “Nucleus: A trip to the heart of matter,” ed. Johns Hopkins University Press, translated into Portuguese, Czech, Hungarian, French, Swedish, and Korean, and the national “Einstein, Albert Einstein, Homem, Cidadão e Cientista/Einstein” and “Histórias da Física em Portugal no século XX”, both ed. Gradiva. Curator of Exhibit “Radioactivity – alpha, beta, gamma: signs of Nature”, Museum of Science ULisboa; Adaptation to Pt of Khan Academy 145 Physics videos; Series of Short Videos “Riddles in Science” for a TV channel.

She is an associate member of the Helmholtz Research Academy Hesse for FAIR/GSI. Nominated by FCT national representative for NuPECC, expert committee of the European Science Foundation. She has held the following positions, among others: President of the Portuguese Society of Physics (SPF), Chief Editor of the SPF publication “Gazeta de Física,” member of the Editorial Advisory Board of “Europhysics News” of the European Physical Society (EPS), elected member of the EPS Executive Committee for two terms, member of the EPS Working Group “Physics for Development.” Member of the European Research Committee on Few-Body Problems; Member of the International Light Cone Advisory Committee, ILCAC, Member of the International Advisory Committee of several Conferences in the field.

She has had important roles in academic innovation and university management: At IST, proposed and launched the Master’s and Ph.D. programs in Biomedical Engineering, served the Scientific Council, was President of the Department of Physics, President of the Pedagogical Council. Member of the University Senate of Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, member of the Permanent Senate Committee for Scientific Affairs, member of the University Senate of the University of Lisbon.

She received the distinctions: “Visiting Professorship” of the Ohio University, for “Distinguished individuals who have attained wide recognition based upon (…) scientific achievement”; “Honorary Member” of the SPF; distinguished in Women’s Day by Agência Nacional Ciência Viva.
