Profile

Graduated in Geology (1962), Master in Geosciences (1970) and PhD (1977) in Geology from the School of Geology of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil). She has three postgraduate programs: in 1978 and 1990 at the University of Aachen, FRG and in 1983 at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. Between 1963 and 1965 she worked as a professional geologist and began her academic career as an Assistant Professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in 1971, where she was promoted to Full Professor in 1986.

She was a pioneer in the introduction of Organic Petrology and Geochemistry in Brazil and its various applications, namely in the study of Sedimentary Basins and the respective definition of palaeotemperatures for hydrocarbon prospecting and exploration. In this regard, he created a School at the institution where he taught, with numerous students and research activities. He carried out in-depth studies of the main Brazilian coal basins, the results of which he published in various papers in the most important international journal in the field, the International Journal of Coal Geology, as well as in various Proceedings of international congresses.

In addition to various university management roles, he also held administrative, scientific, technical and political positions in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. She also held international positions, particularly in connection with the International Committee for Coal and Organic Petrology – ICCP, of which she was Secretary General for eight years. She developed effective collaboration with Portugal, namely through the PhD sandwich scholarship program between the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto. Taking into account her contributions not only to the introduction of Organic Petrology and Geochemistry studies in Brazil, but also when in office as ICCP Secretary General, she was awarded, in 2014, with the Reinhadt Thiessem Medal.
