Profile

PhD in Internal Geodynamics from the University of Lisbon in 1994, where he taught at the Faculty of Sciences from 1982 to 1996. He then moved to the University of Évora, where made de Habilitation in 2004 and where he has been Full Professor of Geology since 2021.
Specialist in Structural Geology and Tectonics in the context of the geodynamic evolution of Portugal and has carried out regular research in Portugal, Morocco and East Timor. He published more than 75 research articles.
Understanding the geological evolution of Portugal has been one of his main objectives, and he was the main editor of the book GEOLOGIA DE PORTUGAL, published in 2013 by Escolar Editora, which, with 140 authors and two volumes with 1623 pages, remains the most complete synthesis in existence. In 2019 he launched the PORTUGAL BEFORE HISTORY project, a trilogy of compendiums published by the Centro Ciência Viva de Estremoz, with the first two volumes published (‘From Global Dynamics to Geological Processes’, 2019 and ‘From Static Maps to a Dynamic Geology of Portugal’, 2023; in a total of 980 pages).
He has extensive teaching experience at various higher education institutions in Portugal and has supervised around 30 doctoral and master’s theses in Portugal, Morocco and East Timor.
He coordinated the installation of the Estremoz Ciência Viva Centre, of which he was Executive Director until 2021, and is currently Chairman of its Scientific Council. Since its inauguration in 2005, the centre has had more than 245,000 visitors in addition to more than 800,000 participants in its activities. Regular author of teaching material in the field of Earth Sciences (e.g. films, books and exhibitions) for pre-university education and the general public.
Integrated member of the Earth Sciences Institute a research unit integrating the universities of Évora, Porto and Minho; he was one of its founders in 2013.
President of the Geological Society of Portugal (2014-2018).
National Commissioner for the National Day of Scientists / Paths of Knowledge (16 May 2023).
Corresponding member of the Science Class of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences (since 2019).
